Curriculum Enhancement
Curriculum Intent
Year 9 Reciprocal Reading Programme
Our Year 9 Reciprocal Reading Programme provides targeted support for students who need to develop their reading comprehension, confidence and understanding of increasingly challenging texts. Based on the evidence-informed FFT Reciprocal Reading approach, students work in small groups to explore texts through four key reading strategies: predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising. These structured discussions help students deepen their understanding, expand their vocabulary and become more independent, reflective readers.
Delivered by trained staff, the programme aims to strengthen reading comprehension, support progress across the curriculum and build students’ confidence when engaging with unfamiliar or complex texts.

Year 10 Functional Skills Programme
Our Year 10 Functional Skills Programme provides a personalised pathway for students who benefit from developing their literacy and numeracy skills through practical, real-life contexts. Learning is designed around everyday situations, helping students to develop skills they will use beyond school. Topics include managing money and budgeting, understanding travel information, completing forms and workplace documents, communicating effectively, and solving real-world mathematical problems.
Through a supportive and inclusive learning environment, students work towards nationally recognised qualifications while developing the confidence and skills needed for adult life.
Year 11 Curriculum Enhancement
In Year 11, Curriculum Enhancement is primarily focused on supporting students to achieve their best in their examination subjects while preparing them for their post-16 destination.
Students use Curriculum Enhancement time to revise, complete coursework, practise past papers and develop effective examination and revision techniques. This provides valuable additional support during an important stage of their education.
Alongside examination preparation, students receive careers information, advice and guidance, including visits from the careers adviser and external agencies. This helps students explore their options and make informed decisions about their next steps.
By combining academic support with preparation for life after Year 11, the programme aims to give students the skills, confidence and guidance they need to move successfully into further education, training or employment.
Year 11 Functional Skills Programme
Our Year 11 Functional Skills Programme prepares students for their next steps by strengthening the essential literacy and numeracy skills required for further education, employment and independent living. The programme offers an accessible and engaging pathway, ensuring that students can achieve recognised qualifications that are directly relevant to their future goals.
Teaching focuses on practical application, enabling students to confidently use English and mathematics in real-life situations. By the end of Year 11, students are equipped with valuable qualifications and the confidence to take their next steps successfully.
