Inspiring Academic Ambition: Our School’s Experience with The Brilliant Club

Our school recently had the exciting opportunity to take part in a programme delivered by The Brilliant Club, a national charity dedicated to improving access to top universities for secondary school students. Their work focuses particularly on helping students to develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in higher education.

The Brilliant Club connects schools with PhD researchers who deliver university-style tutorials to small groups of students. Through its main programme, The Scholars Programme, pupils are introduced to challenging academic content, independent learning, and critical thinking. The aim is not only to raise attainment, but also to give students a real insight into what university learning is like and why education matters for their future. The programme helps to close the gap in access to higher education by building academic confidence, encouraging aspiration, and explaining university life.

At our school, 14 students from Years 7 and 8 were selected to take part in the programme. Over several weeks, they attended weekly tutorials led by a PhD tutor from the University of Warwick. These sessions followed a university-style teaching approach, encouraging students to think deeply, ask questions, and engage in discussion.

The focus of their studies was a science-based topic titled Disease Detectives. Students explored illnesses such as malaria and investigated how diseases spread, are diagnosed, and treated. The sessions required them to work collaboratively in groups, analyse information, and prepare presentations to share their learning with their peers.

A key part of the programme was the final assignment. Each student completed an independent project in the form of an essay, demonstrating the knowledge and skills they had developed. These projects were formally assessed and graded, giving students a taste of university-level evaluation. We are incredibly proud that one of our students achieved a 1st class grade—an outstanding accomplishment.

The programme concluded with a special graduation ceremony at Keble College, part of University of Oxford. This was a truly memorable day for our students. They enjoyed a tour of the historic college, with the dining hall being a particular highlight. The day was filled with engaging activities, including presentations about university life and further education pathways. Students also had the chance to meet peers from other schools across the Midlands, take part in discussions, and share their experiences of the programme.

Overall, our involvement with The Brilliant Club has been an incredibly positive experience. The programme not only enriched our students’ academic knowledge but also helped them to understand the importance of education and the opportunities available to them in the future.

By exposing students to university-style learning and environments, The Brilliant Club plays a vital role in raising aspirations and opening doors. Our students have come away more confident, more curious, and more motivated to succeed in their educational journeys. Notably, several students who had not previously considered university have now seen a different side to it and are beginning to view it as a realistic and exciting option for their future.
