Finham meets a Lord through 'Learn with the Lords' programme

This week, a group of students enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime trip to London with organised visits to the House of Commons, House of Lords, the London Eye, and a riverboat cruise along the Thames.
A highlight of the day was a special audience with Lord Heywood, a member of the House of Lords with strong links to Coventry. Lord Heywood previously served as a councillor in Coventry and was also a rugby referee for Old Leamingtonians for several years.
During an engaging Q&A session, students asked thought-provoking questions such as:
- Why do laws take so long to be passed?
- Why is financial education not mandatory in schools?
- What was it like working with David Cameron?
Lord Heywood shared some valuable insights and advice with the students.
“Don’t stand for election or take part in any type of competition if you’re not prepared to lose,” he advised. Reflecting on his own journey, he added, “I had to go back to school to repeat my A-levels. There’s no one path to success. You might think you know what you want to do, but life will throw you curveballs that you need to respond to.”
The trip offered students a memorable glimpse into the workings of British democracy, as well as personal inspiration from someone who has walked a varied and successful path in public life.
