  • Finham receives CPD from Mark Finnis - author of 'Restorative Practice'

The Lion Alliance hosted Restorative Practice CPD from Mark Finnis this week for colleagues from across the region.

Colleagues discussed with him the processes behind restorative conversations with him sharing some real insights and strategies that could be deployed in addressing some of the most challenging behavioural situations we come across in schools.

    'Stay curious, not furious'
    'What you permit, you promote.
'What you walk past, you tolerate’.
‘Contrary to popular belief, schools that deploy restorative practices are not schools that do not have rules’.

Acknowledging that our own perspective may be different to others'.

He raised a very hard-hitting point - why do we refuse to acknowledge different perspectives in conflict situations? Why do we think we are right 95% of the time?

A simple guide to staged restorative practice
    1. What happened? Big open, short questions. Not accusational. Don’t seek to blame, but to understand. ‘Stay curious, not furious’.
    2. Who has been affected by this? Encouraging empathy. Bubble 2 is all about relationships.
    3. What needs to happen now? Their idea for a solution. They are more likely to say ‘no’ to this question. ‘So what would be fair? What would your solution be?’ Should be more than just ‘I’m sorry.’

How often do we get stuck at stage 1, ie: what happened? We should be spending more time on stage 3, ie; what needs to happen now? You may need to just jump to the last stage in recognition that stage 1 and 2 is in the past.

NB: ‘What you don’t repair, you are condemned to repeat… If it’s predictable, it should be preventable’.
