Course entry requirements

Specification: OCR
Subject entry requirements: GCSE grade 6 or higher in Geography

The study of Geography is an exploration around the world of the evolving and sensitive relationship between the natural and human world; nurturing global citizens of the future. Embarking on studying geography for A Level provides a distinctive opportunity to make sense of the world and challenge misconceptions. New events will become enlightening and understandable, such as volcanic eruptions or a global financial crisis. Students will study a series of case studies which will allow them to be empathetic and make comparisons to recent events, meaning they are an informed global citizen. Students will explore in depth both physical and human geographical concepts and processes. The geographical debates section takes some of the most dynamic issues the planet faces and encourages learners to engage with, reflect on and think critically about them. Learners will gain a deep understanding of their two chosen topics, exploring the interactions between people and the environment. Each debate topic engages learners through an enquiry approach which enables them to articulate opinions and provide evidenced arguments across a range of situations.

Geography is an all-inclusive subject which can provide students with a broad range of transferable skills. It can help provide skills and knowledge for a variety of careers in areas including environmental law, tourism and travel, planning, meteorology, surveying, civil engineering and administration.

Students will be assessed through three exams at the end of the course.

  • Two of which are 1 and a half hours long and a third, which is the geographical debate paper which is 2 and a half hours long.
  • Students are also required to complete an independent investigation worth 20% of their overall grade during the first half of year 13.

Students will be offered the opportunity to engage in a number of fieldwork opportunities over the duration of the course covering both human and physical enquiries to support their completion of their independent investigation.
