Drama and Theatre Studies

Entry Requirements

You should have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, one of which should be English.

Assessment

Exam Board: EdExcel

AS: Unit 1 (40%) - You will study 2 texts in lessons and complete practical and written coursework tasks demonstrating your understanding. A portfolio of notes/bullet points make up the written elements of this unit. You will attend live theatre performances and write a review of one of these to submit as coursework. Internally assessed.
The second section for assessment is a review of a love performance for a production you have seen over the year with the class. The study will relate to acting, directing, design/technical and the social or cultural relevance of the text. We will spend time discussing in class.
Assessment - Your teacher marks your practical, design work and written work for each area of study.

Unit 2 (60%) - Performance to an examiner of a selection of scripts. Acting or technical/design can be assessed. You will perform/design for a group play which will be directed by a tutor.
The second part of the exam is either a monologue/dialogue or design for this. Written performance interpretation notes must be completed. Externally assessed. Assessment - An external examiner will come to the performance to assess you.

A2: Unit 3 (40%) - You will study 2 texts in lessons and complete practical and written
This unit requires the creation of a unique and original piece of theatre. The knowledge and understanding gained in the AS units can now be applied to a created production.
Students will be assessed on both the process of creation and the finished product in the form of a performance to an invited audience. The process is then evaluated in a written document.

Unit 4 (60%) - This externally assessed unit takes the form of a 2.5 hours written paper in three sections.
Sections A and B require students to explore the ancient Greek play Lysistrata, from the point of view of a director in both an academic and practical way.
In Section C a live performance of a Shakespearian play is viewed and evaluated and a comparison made with the original staging conditions of the play.

 


Film Studies

Entry Requirements

5 A* to C GCSEs including Grade C or above at GCSE English.

AS: Unit 1 - Exploring Film Form
Unit 2 - British and American Film

A2: Unit 3 - Film Research and Creative Projects
Unit 4 - Varieties of Film Experience - Issues and Debates

 


Media Studies

Entry Requirements

5 A*- C GCSE including a minimum of C grade in GCSE English.

Assessment

AS: Unit 1 - Investigating Media
Unit 2 - Creating Media
Unit 3 - Critical Perspectives
Unit 4 - Research and Production

 


Music

Entry Requirements

The course needs musical ability including composition, performance (about Grade 6) and theory (about Grade 5). It is ideal but not necessary to have GCSE Music grade A*- C. Please note that this course is offered within the SW Federation.
