Finham's Equestrian Team
In April Finham entered our first team into a school equestrian competition. We competed in the Princethorpe and Kingsley Show Jumping, entering a team and one individual. These riders were:
Kym James
Lauren Spence
Elen Owen
Lucy Pauley
Each of the girls performed extremely well on the day and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of representing the school at a sport they enjoy.
The team came 8th out of 16 teams, an amazing achievement considering our experience and we were the only comprehensive school entered in the competition.
Kym James then qualified for the individual and came 20th out of 80, a great achievement.
Lauren Spence also entered the 2'9" individual but had an unfortunate 8 faults, as the ground had become very slippy.
Well Done Girls and Thank You to parents for enabling them to take part and being so supportive throughout the day.
Wednesday 30th April 2011 - Bishop Ullathorne Away Derby, Girls dominate Derby to retain trophy; Final Score 6-4 Finham
The final score reflects a close encounter with Ullathorne, which should not have been the case, especially with the brilliant whitewash in the netball. The year 9 & 10 netball squads destroyed their rivals with massive wins. The boys fought well, but had already lost their first game before the games started, as year 8 were not able to field a team. The year 9 & 10 teams both managed draws, with the year 11 football squad losing their final game in Finham shirts. Finham retains the trophy for the second time running. It now stands at 3 victories to Finham and 2 to Bishop Ullathorne. This is always one of the highlights in the sporting calendar and is always played in great sprit. Well done to all players.
Wednesday 23rd March 2011 - Year 10 Football team - March onto the Coventry Cup Finals
Finham Park took on Stoke Park in the eagerly awaited semi-final on the 23rd March with a place in the final of the Coventry Cup at stake. Finham began well with Andy Linsted and Jack Murray looking lively from the off. Rob Taylor was bossing things in the middle of the park with his distribution and fierce tackling rocking Stoke Park. George Swain marshalled the defence well keeping out any threat on the Finham Goal. Rob Taylors long throws were causing Stoke lots of problems and Ole Bacon twice came close to getting on the end of one of these. Eventually with about 5 minutes remaining in the half Jack Whyte was brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded. 'Muzza' Stepped up confidently to slot the penalty into the bottom right hand corner and Finham took a 1-0 lead into the break. The second half quickly followed the same pattern as the first with Finham on top and a strong run from Rob Taylor ended up with Jack Stubbs tapping in. Two further goals from Rob and Jack Whyte finished things off with Finham looking very strong. We now go on to face Ullathorne in what is sure to be a very exciting final-Well done boys!

Friday 19th November - World Netball Series 2010
A coach load of staff, pupils, parents and other family members travelled to Liverpool for the World Netball Series held at the Echo Arena. We were treated to some exciting matches between the top six countries in the world: Australia, New Zealand, England, Jamaica, Malawi and South Africa. Using the new Fast Net rules, matches were played over 4 quarters lasting six minutes each with teams being allowed to nominate one quarter for Powerplay where goals were worth double points. Players were also allowed to score from outside the D to gain double points, which added to the excitement. The highlight of the day had to be the match between England and Australia. The first two quarters were pretty even but then England chose to use their Powerplay in the third quarter and built up a good lead. Australia though, saved their Powerplay until the final quarter and managed to claw their way back into the match. With seconds to go the match was level at 25 all but with Australia in possession things didn't look good for England. As the final whistle blew Australia's Goal Attack scored but luckily her foot was outside the court and the goal was disallowed. England ended the day in 2nd place behind Jamaica. It was a great trip - thanks to Miss Wildig and Miss Brown for organising the day.

Saturday 20th November - Engand v Samoa Rugby Twickenham
A great day was had by 50 students who play for the year 7-9 rugby teams. The rugby on the pitch was a bit scrappy, with England edging a close game. Students got up very close to England Captain Lewis Moody as he pulled up in front of the stadium.
Wednesday 10th November - Netball game against Barrs hill
On Wednesday 10th November 2010 the year 10 B team participated in a very enjoyable netball match. After school they made their way to Barrs Hill School to play an away game. Throughout the whole game all 9 girls gave their best performance. It was a very competitive match. At the end of the first quarter the Finham girls were winning 2-1. The girls kept their victory and won the game 8-3. All of the girls played exceptionally well. At the end of the match Barrs hill chose Esme Long as the player of the match. Esme played Goal attack with Victoria smith who played goal shooter; they played very well together and as a result scored 8 goals. A great achievement, well done everyone!!

Saturday 6th November - U14 Coventry Schools Netball Tournament
So, Finham geared itself up for another Coventry Schools netball tournament on a bright Saturday morning. As defending league winners the pressure was on for the girls to perform to their usual high standard and didn't they step up to the plate! The girls played against King Henry's, Bluecoat and Cardinal Newman in the first round and they performed exceptionally well, and although they lost to Henry's, they played some high quality netball against Newman beating them 15-1 and they fought hard against Bluecoat forcing them to a 2-2 draw. This was enough to take them through to the semi finals where they met Bablake and I could not have been more proud of the girls and in the way they played. They made Bablake work hard every single minute and on attack gave Bablake some difficulties. Unfortunately, Bablake came away with the win, only by 2 goals so we were to finish off the tournament playing for 3rd place against Coundon, a game that was filled with anticipation as this was the team that the girls beat to become league winners last season. In true form the girls came away with a 7-5 win resulting in 3rd place out of 16 teams with only Henry's and Bablake ahead of us. It was a pleasure to take the girls to the tournament and they are always a joy to watch. I am so impressed with their continued development and the standard of netball they are producing. Star player of the tournament: Asha Jagatia.
Team: Hannah McGrory, Laura Neale, Daisy Turnecliff, Asha Jagatia, Aneesha Jagatia, Chloe Smith, Alice Bowker, Iman Vinning, Abi Black.
Saturday 9th October 2010 -Year 7 Netball
On Saturday 9 October 2010, our Year 7 Netball team played their first match of the season against Bluecoat Secondary School. The team was:
- Meila Watkins
- Bethany Stonehouse
- Charli Curley
- Corrine Cairns
- Lauren Campbell
- Georgia Carter
- Casey Hawkins
- Eve Castledine
- Rhiana Parekh
For the first quarter Corrine and Meila were substitutes. At the beginning of the first quarter it started well and we had some great passes going. Bluecoats snatched the ball off us a couple of times, but we fought back and at the end of the quarter, the score was 1-0 to Finham park.
In the second quarter, Bluecoat managed to score a goal, but Finham did not give in and scored another goal making the end of the quarter score 2-1 to Finham Park.
At the start of the third quarter, Bluecoat scored another goal making it 2-2. Finham made a great comeback making the score 3-2 to Finham. The whistle blew for the start of the last quarter and Finham were in the lead. Unfortunately, Bluecoat scored a goal making it 3-3. Finham did not hesitate and we scored another goal making it 4-3 to us.
In the last three minutes, we were trying to get the ball up to the post, but Bluecoats were making some great interceptions. However, we managed to get a great shot into the goal making the final score 5-3 to Finham Park.

We didn't manage to achieve our 1st place positions like last year, but our year 8 Boys finished in 2nd place, narrowly missing out on first place, and our yr 7 & 8 girls both finished in 3rd place.

Year 11 Netball Tournament, Wednesday 6th October 2010 by Enya Anderson (WD)
Our competition was very tough and although we may not of won our matches, our whole team tried very hard. Jessie (C) despite being a year below everyone else played very well and intercepted the ball many times. Tara (GA) and Lia (GS) kept the ball in the circle and scored loads, from quite a bit away most times! Roshni (WA) was very good at getting the ball down the court into the goal circle. Mel (GD) and Ellie (GK) did a great job in the defending circle, despite the amount of times the ball was in there! All the girls played really well and were ambassadors for Finham Park as always.
Rugby Development
During the summer Finham Park installed a new full size rugby pitch. The school now has three pitches making it more viable for schools in Coventry and in particular Warwickshire to bring three teams to play on one night. For the first time Finham has entered its year 10 team into the prestigious Daily Mail Cup. The school is continually developing fantastic links with local clubs, bringing in local coaches to help lead training sessions.
Ironman Triathlon
During the summer Mr Amos and Mr Day both took part in Ironman Nottingham. Both completed the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.3 mile run. Mr Amos completed the distance in 11 hours & 14 minutes, Mr Day 12 hours & 4 minutes. Next up for the Duo is the Nottingham marathon, where they will be joined by Maths teacher Mr Ditch.
Wednesday 29th October 2010 - Year 10 through to second round of West Midlands Cup
Finham travelled to Birmingham on Wednesday night to take on George Dixon in the first round of the West Midlands cup. The game saw debuts for Edward Delaney, Paddy Hughes, Jack Whyte and Pav Due in a reshuffled line up. After a strong start George Dixon took the lead but soon after, following a Rory Delap style throw in from Rob Taylor Finham were soon level at 1-1. Going into the break at 1-1 Finham were playing the better football with Murray and Stubbs bossing the midfield area. Soon after half time a delightful corner from Ryan Shouker was turned in by Rob Taylor to make the score 2-1. Having battled immensely all game Pav was then replace by Jack Whyte who tucked away a debut goal to wrap the game up for Finham. A great performance from the lads and we look forward to the next round.
September 28th Cross Country - League Race Two Blue Coat
35 athletes competed at Blue Coat School. Star performer Harry Lumb produced a superb sprint finish to win the year 8/9 boys race. His team mates stacked up behind him and they now look certain to remain in the team lead. The year 10/11 girls were led home by Ramnik Soar, who seems to have found good form. All her team mates finished in the top seven and look certain to clinch the league title. The next race is at Bishop Ullathorne on Thursday 14th October, which will see competitors run as a relay team.
Finham Girls representing the County!
On Sunday 19th September at Caludon Castle School, the Warwickshire U16 Netball County trials were held. Becca Hyndman (Yr10), Penny Lewis (Yr10), Daisy Turnecliff (Yr9) and Phoebe Aston (Yr8) were asked to trial.
The day was tough going with skills and mini games for the morning before a cut, after which more games were played. 100 girls attended in all with the selectors looking for a squad of 40.
Unfortunately Becca Hyndman wasn't successful this year, but will continue to be a superstar shooter for her Yr10 team in addition to playing for Henley Netball Club.
Brilliantly; Penny, Daisy and Phoebe were all successful and are now looking forward to an action packed season ahead full of school, club and county fixtures! A massive thank you to all their parents for their continued support to the sport and a massive congratulations to all the girls!
Tuesday 21st September 2010, Cross Country - League Race One Finham Park
The cross country league are off to a flying start with Finham entering its biggest teams for both girls and boys, in several years. In the year 7 boys races, Finham had 17 athletes competing, with Tait Bailey Griffin leading the team home in 7th position and Jasmine Hundal finishing 8th position.
Star athlete was once again year 9 student Harry Lumb, who won his race by 100m. He is now the favourite, to pick up the league title this year. Our year 8/9 boy's team and year 10/11 girl's team have the best chances of winning overall team titles this year.
The next race sees athletes challenging a hilly course at Blue Coat School on Tuesday 28 September 2010. For full results please check out the latest fixtures/results section of the PE website.
On Sunday 12th September the Coventry Satellite U14 Netball trials were held at Caludon Castle. A number of girls from Yr 8 and 9 were picked to trial and those girls that attended represented the school superbly playing competitive Netball along with making new friends. Massive congratulations need to go to Amy Trenberth, Hannah McGrory, Daisy Turnecliff, Phoebe Aston and Asha Jagatia who were asked to attend the afternoon session. The afternoon proved to be intense as ever with the pressure and scrutiny of the coaches and selectors getting even more intimidating. Unfortunately Amy Trenberth was not selected, but she, along with the other Yr 8s, still have another year to hone their skills.
Brilliantly; Daisy, Asha, Phoebe and Hannah McGrory all managed to secure places in the squad, with Daisy and Phoebe being asked to trial for U16 County Squad; Daisy is only 13 and Phoebe is only 12!
Well done to all girls and thank you to their parents for taking the time to transport, support, cheer and cross fingers for the girls, the PE department are very grateful and look forward to another great Netball season. (Girls who trialled are: Maisie Boyd, Amy Trenberth, Charley Lucas, Phoebe Aston, Lauren Parker, Asha Jagatia, Aneesha Jagatia, Daisy Turnecliff and Hannah McGrory all are receiving achievement points for Contribution to Community and Achievement!)
